Manuscript

Introduction
Under the hood, a table of contents typically consists of multiple wiki pages (one if there is little to describe) that are linked to the main page about the manuscript. In turn, each page can contain multiple items.

To avoid overload and perhaps to keep a sane head, we tend to split the longer ones over multiple pages and attempt to use natural breaking points, such as a break in handwriting or genre, to begin a new page. To the visitor of the site, these pages will appear in embedded form, one after another, without any indication (except to us) that we have broken up the table.

Rules of thumb:

  • Use multiple pages to create a lengthy table of contents.
  • To ensure that pages are shown in the right order, please enter a padded ASCII number in the Serial field below: for instance, if the MS consists of 121 numbered leaves and your page start at f. 1, write 001; if it starts at 32, write 032, etc.
  • List no more than 30 items a page, preferably fewer. Complex forms can be data-intensive and you may notice that after 30 items or so, re-loading the form starts to feel sluggish.
  • When deciding on items to be described on a single page, try to apply a bit of logic based on breaking points such as the beginning of a new hand, a codicological anomaly, or textual classification, e.g. a genealogical section. You can use headings or intermediate descriptions to provide some clarity and aid the reader. This is not always to do, or do consistently, but your attempts will be appreciated.
  • If you are not focusing on other parts of the manuscript, do reserve some space if you expect it might be needed in the future. If you are skipping a section, you may want to begin a new page for subsequent items.
Catalogue entry

Manuscript items

Help
Add a structured table of contents (TOC) for a manuscript, or part of a manuscript, on an item by item basis.

New textual items can be added by using the button below (+ Add item) or they can pre-inserted using the arrow button which appears when you hover over any item. The most important fields are (1) those for position by folio/page/column number, (2) for the text in question (insert title of the relevant catalogue entry), and (3) for descriptions. TOCs for large manuscripts are best split into appropriate subentries (examples: Dublin, Trinity College, MS 1339, Dublin, Trinity College, MS 1318).

[Toggle[
"Manuscript" (default) or "Comments". The toggle is usually kept at the default "Manuscript". Use "Comments" if you want to add a general description, subheading or legend (rather than a description of any particular item). This replaces older methods, such as writing NOTEXT in the input field for texts.
Categories
Labels may be used to categorise an item. Note that "no item" is deprecated in favour of using the "Comments" toggle.
Locus
Depending on your needs, you can pick the series of fields for foliation, pagination of columniation, or a combination if you are including parallel systems of numbering. There are some conventions to keep in mind for the finer distinctions. For instance, f. 4(45)ra.34 means means f. 4 (alternative foliation: 45), recto, first column, line 34.
Texts
Links to the catalogue entry of a text if available; if not, you can reserve a title for future use.
Heading
Typically title headings, rubrics (marginal or otherwise) that announce a text. You can add more than one by separating them with ... between them, e.g. Prologus ... Incipit textus.
Incipit
The first words of the text itself. If you need to indicate line-breaks, use forward slashes with spaces around them, e.g. First line / Second line.
Scribal hand
Through the main page for this manuscript you can add record and describe scribal hands, which then become uniquely referentiable. The form below lets you associate one or multiple hands with each single item. The interface for querying these data should become available later. This feature was added in April 2021.
