17th Medieval Dublin Symposium

Dublin, Ireland
This year’s symposium features a paper by Bernard Meehan, Head of Research Collections and Keeper of Manuscripts at Trinity College Dublin, on a exciting recent acquisition of a St Mary’s Abbey manuscript that has finally returned to Dublin after 400 years abroad.

A recent interview with Bernard Meehan, Seán Duffy and Jane Maxwell in the Independent explains that:

‘The manuscript was produced after a devastating fire at the Abbey in 1304 and details life inside the walls.

It also includes an account of the Trojan War, detailed descriptions of the topography of Ireland and Geoffrey of Monmouth’s ‘The History of the Kings of Britain’.’

Topics covered in this year’s symposium include investigations of the Columban legacy of Lambay (Gabriel Cooney), and will outline findings from excavations in suburban Dublin (Paul Duffy) and Swords Castle gatehouse (Mark Moraghan).

Other papers will examine the composition of Dublin’s late medieval urban society (Brian Coleman), and Hugh II de Lacy’s thirteenth-century rebellion (Daniel Brown), while Dublin’s literary heritage will be explored in papers on a so-called chason de geste of Brian Boru (Catherine Swift), and the story of a dragon terrorising medieval Dubliners (Caoimhe Whelan).
