Symposium on the Sociolinguistics of the Celtic Languages 2016

Dublin, Ireland Trinity Long Room Hub Arts and Humanities Research Institute, Trinity College Dublin, College Green, Dublin 2
The contemporary dynamics of the Celtic languages offer a context-specific window into the functioning of minoritised languages and language varieties in contemporary Western society. The study of the current circumstances of these languages and their speakers can illuminate the sociolinguistic factors that shape processes of language loss, maintenance, revitalisation and revival. It thus enhances our understanding of how social actors recruit language in negotiating increasingly fluid social, cultural and political environments. In addition, it adds to our understanding of both language and society in a globalised world. The second Celtic Sociolinguistics Symposium, to be held in Trinity College Dublin October 13th-14th 2016, will provide a forum for researchers working on aspects of the sociolinguistics of the Celtic Languages.
