Help:*selgāFrom Van Hamel wiki
The aims, methods and scope of the project are outlined on the project page. What follows is intended to give our editors a quick behind-the-scenes impression of the way that *selgā is organised and structured. The specifics of editing the catalogue will be dealt with separately.
The three things that constitute *selgāThe present focus of the project is on three kinds of resources for Celtic studies:
with special attention being given to the links which connect them. Every text, every manuscript and every publication is described on its own page, also referred to as ‘entry’. A number of additional types of pages/entries help to organise the catalogue, such as those on authors and languages (mainly relevant for texts), on libraries and collections (manuscripts), and on scholars, publication series and journals (bibliography). Semantic dataThe Van Hamel site differs from most MW-based ‘wikis’ in that its content is enriched with semantic annotations, which can be retrieved, combined and displayed in many different ways, both on this website and on the wider semantic web (e.g. JSON). This functionality is enabled by Semantic MediaWiki (SMW) as well as a number of related extensions to the core package of MediaWiki. For instance, bibliographic references in entries on texts and manuscripts are cited through a template which queries data from revelant entries and wraps them in a fitting format. In turn, these bibliographic entries show information about their usage elsewhere in the catalogue. This is only one of many possibilities. Semantic annotations are added either directly, using SMW markup, or indirectly, using templates where such markup is predefined. Templates and formsConsistency of data structure and presentation is facilitated through the use of custom templates for each type of page. These templates are associated with user forms, so that editors only need to add details to the appropriate fields, without having to keep a cheatsheet for template parameters at hand. Of course, editors can still edit the source text directly if they so prefer. Technical specificationsThis website is powered by the MediaWiki software package and uses a variety of ‘extensions’ (aka modules or plugins) to enhance its functionality. See Special:Version for further specifications.
