Date
1032 x 1042/46. Gerard Murphy accepts that the poem was composed to be recited in Áed’s presence and identifies a number of religious men who are mentioned in the poem. On these historical grounds, he suggests a date between 1032, the year in which Áed took office as bishop of Armagh, and 1046, when Úa Bíleóige, lector of Armagh (1041–1046), died, and probably before 1042, the year in which Eochagán, superior of Slane, died.(1)n. 1 Gerard Murphy, ‘A poem in praise of Aodh Úa Foirréidh, Bishop of Armagh (1032–1056)’ in Measgra i gcuimhne Mhichíl Uí Chléirigh .i. Miscellany of historical and linguistic studies in honour of Brother Michael Ó Cléirigh, O.F.M., Chief of the Four Masters, 1643-1943... (1944) Benjamin Hudson notes that the stanza on Dubthach Albanach (beg. Dubthach duine dligthech dúr) also occurs in the A-version of the Annals of Ulster (TCD 1282, f. 45c, top margin) and suggests that it is older than the poem as a whole.(2)n. 2 Benjamin T.
