Cú Chulainn, who has been following Medb on her way to Dún Sobairche and Cuib, spots Buide mac Báin (coming) from Slíab Cuilinn: Buide is driving the bull [Donn Cúailnge] and 15 heifers (samaisci), with 60 cloaked warriors of Ailill’s household for protection.

Cú Chulainn first approaches the warriors and is told that the cattle are from the mountain and that the cowherd is “where we found him”. [...] Cú Chulainn finds Buide at a ford, who identifies himself to him and describes himself as nachit aiss, nachit chara (“one who hates you not, who loves you not”, tr. by O'Rahilly). After announcing ‘Are, in gaí se for Bude’, Cú Chulainn hurls a short spear (cert-gae) at him: it pierces his armpit, with an impact so great that his liver splits in half, and Buide dies at the ford that bears his name: Áth mBuide.

The bull is taken to the encampment (dúnad).
